In May 2016 a number of NSW local government area Councils were amalgamated, MidCoast Council being formed as a rural region covering over 10,000 sqkm on the NSW coast and hinterland. Initial development of the place identity included consultation with community via online surveys and identity workshops across the region. The principal aim of the MidCoast Place Identity project was to establish a unified sense of place identity and clarify what is valued by the people of the newly-formed region. The community of the region was asked to “tell us what you value” to discover what represents MidCoast’s diverse communities, brings them together and will carry MidCoast into the future. The process delivered an understanding of the place brand – ie that MidCoast has a close connection to nature and a natural connection between its communities. The outputs from these place identity interactions informed the development of brand concepts and MidCoast Council’s Community Strategic Plan – an important resource which establish priorities for the future of the region.
